Introduction
If you only have time for one heritage house in George Town, Penang, make it the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. While the famous Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze) is known for its architecture, the "Green Mansion" is where you go to see the actual stuff. We love this spot because it feels less like a sterile museum and more like a wealthy family just stepped out for a moment, leaving behind their glittering treasures.
The house was originally the residence and office of Chung Keng Quee, a 19th-century Chinese kapitan and secret society leader. Today, it has been restored to reflect a typical rich Peranakan home. The Peranakans—or Straits Chinese—created a unique sub-culture by blending Chinese traditions with local Malay influences and British colonial tastes. From the floor tiles imported from England to the Scottish ironworks and Chinese carved wood panels, the mansion is a masterpiece of cultural fusion.
What to See and Do at Pinang Peranakan Mansion
Baba Nyonya Jewelry Museum
Connected to the main house, this section contains a staggering collection of gold, silver, and precious stones. You can view the intricate kerosang (brooches) used to fasten traditional kebaya dresses and elaborate hairpins that define Nyonya fashion.
Traditional Peranakan Hall
The main hall is a lesson in symmetry and status. Flanked by mother-of-pearl furniture and Victorian floor tiles, this area was used to receive guests and demonstrates the wealth the community amassed through trade.
Antique Collection & Glassware
Throughout the dining rooms and bedrooms, you'll find an exhaustive collection of "Nyonyaware", colorful phoenix-and-peony porcelain—alongside European glassware and mirrors that were highly prized status symbols in the 1800s.
Ancestral Hall
Separated from the main living quarters by a small courtyard, the Ancestral Hall remains a solemn and beautifully preserved space where the family’s lineage was honored, featuring some of the most intricate woodcarvings in the entire complex.
Getting there and around
Located on Church Street (Lebuh Gereja) in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage zone, the mansion is accessible on foot. We recommend walking if you are already in George Town’s heritage core. If you are coming from further away, like Batu Ferringhi, take a Grab directly to the entrance. Rapid Penang buses also stop nearby at the Weld Quay Terminal, which is a short 5-minute walk from the mansion.
