Cheong Fatt Tze (The Blue Mansion)
The indigo-hued architectural masterpiece of George Town’s legendary tycoon

Introduction
If there is one building that defines the architectural soul of George Town, Penang, it is the Blue Mansion. Cloaked in a distinctive indigo blue hue, which is a color originally derived from natural lime wash, this 38-room mansion was once the private residence of Cheong Fatt Tze, a powerful businessman and diplomat. We love this spot because it is not just a museum. It is a living piece of history that successfully balanced Chinese craftsmanship with Western luxury.
The mansion rose to global fame as a filming location for Crazy Rich Asians, but its true value lies in the meticulous restoration that earned it the UNESCO Most Excellent Heritage Conservation Award. Whether you are here for the architecture, the history, or just the perfect Instagram shot, the mansion offers an atmosphere of quiet grandeur that is hard to find elsewhere in the city.

Courtyard & Architecture
The heart of the mansion is the open-air central courtyard. Built according to strict Feng Shui principles, it is designed to "catch" wealth through rainwater channeled into internal drains. Take a moment to look up at the Gable Ends and the Chien Nien (cut-and-paste porcelain) decorations on the roofline, they are some of the finest examples of the craft in Southeast Asia.
Indigo Walls (Photography Spot)
The mansion’s exterior is its most famous feature. The vibrant blue walls provide a stunning backdrop for photography. While the interior is reserved for tours and guests, the outer walls and the entrance gate are accessible and offer a glimpse into the scale of this "Grand Dame" of George Town.
Getting there and around
The Blue Mansion is located on Leith Street, just a short walk from the main heritage core of George Town. If you are staying in the city center, we recommend taking a trishaw for the full heritage experience. For those coming from further away, like Batu Ferringhi, a Grab car is the most efficient option as parking on Leith Street can be extremely tight.
