Introduction

Central Market is that unmistakable baby-blue building that’s been a fixture of Kuala Lumpur since 1888. It started out as a simple wet market, but today it’s the go-to spot for anyone who wants to see the artsy side of Malaysia

It’s just a quick walk from the chaos of Chinatown, but the energy here is much more relaxed. We really like how the ground floor is split into zones like Lorong Melayu, Lorong Cina, and Lorong India. It makes it easy to see how each culture contributes to the local craft scene. Whether you’re looking for a hand-painted silk batik, a traditional kite, or some unique woodcarvings, you’ll find the quality here is much better than what’s sold at the typical tourist stalls nearby.

What to See and Do at Central Market

Kasturi Walk

This is the covered pedestrian lane right next to the main building. You cannot miss the entrance because it has a massive archway shaped like a traditional Wau Bulan kite. We usually head here for the street food. It is a solid place to grab a snack like putu bambu while you browse for clothes or trinkets.

Illusion 3D Art Museum

Tucked inside the market's annex, this place is packed with over 30 hand painted 3D murals. It is a great way to kill an hour, especially if you have kids with you who want to take photos interacting with tigers or dinosaurs.

Annexe Gallery

This is the edgier side of Pasar Seni. The Annexe Gallery hosts contemporary art exhibitions, indie film screenings, and provocative performance art. It’s the best place to witness KL’s modern creative pulse and meet local artists who are pushing the boundaries of traditional Malaysian art.

Getting there and around

By LRT/MRT

This is the easiest way. Take the Kelana Jaya Line (LRT) or the Kajang Line (MRT) to the Pasar Seni Station. The market is a 3-minute walk from the exit.

On Foot

If you are already at Petaling Street (Chinatown) or Merdeka Square, Central Market is less than 10 minutes away by foot.

Frequently asked questions
